Ohio Information Security Forum Celebrates Anniversary
Information Technology Forum Mark Second Year of Providing IT Security Experiences with Peers

DAYTON, OHIO, June 30, 2008 The Ohio Information Security forum, which meets the second Thursday of each month at Miami Valley Research Park in Beavercreek, will celebrate its’ two-year anniversary July 10. For Deral Heiland and Nate Power, two area technology professionals employed in the area of IT security, a void was amongst the myriad of IT special interest groups throughout the Miami Valley. So, they undertook the opportunity to put together the Ohio Information Security Forum to focus solely on information technology security from an agnostic point of view. The material’s intended reach, which is quite technical, is for those involved with administering or engineering computer systems.

What's different about the Ohio Information Security Forum is that there is no cost or membership fee to attend, and it’s rare for a speaker from a leading technology vendor to be featured. Regular attendees take turns to draw and share from their own professional experience with security products and practice.

One staple of the forum is a hands-on demonstration of a current security threat, vulnerability, hacking technique or trend. The segment, coined “Now They Own You”, showcases defense tactics and techniques.

For the true tech, each topic typically evolves into a haven of a detailed discussion, hence forum. For many, this is supplemental training at no additional cost to their respective organization. It’s also a labor of love, as those that do the planning and those that regularly attend sacrifice their time to keep it going.

This year, Digital Controls Corporation, an area provider of professional security services, has been prominent supporter with the Ohio InfoSec’s on-going activity by providing sponsorships to cover expenses for venue fees, food and refreshments. To learn more about the Ohio Information Security Forum, information is available at www.ohioinfosec.org. The site includes a backlog of presentations on various topics dating back to the forum’s initial launch.
